Everyday he does a podcast for about 6 minutes during his commute to his office, talking about what they're doing in their company (which BTW went from startup to over 29,000 ACTIVE paying members in about 2 1/2 years - crazy...) Anyway, I've got tons of gold from this podcast and I think you will too :-)

No matter what you want to do, you’ve got to be good at Marketing.
People don't get how important marketing is. You don't believe me, look at shows like Shark Tank. Everybody is all about the idea. Always the idea. When I go into business, I do it completely differently. When I have an idea, I try to have a simultaneous thought: is this thing marketable? We call it CPA for those of us who know about marketing. CPA stands for cost-per-acquisition of a customer. You could have the greatest idea ever, but if the cost to get a person to buy your product is more than you can sell it for, then you're dead in the water. You've killed your dreams before you can even launch the business!
Your cost of CPA is directly related to your scale out marketing. It's related to other factors too, like the zeitgeist of the world we live in, the amount of pragmatist versus people who are early adopters and so on, but that's for another more advanced conversation.
What I want to talk about today, are three keys that might be helpful to you. 1. Marketing Truth Marketing is all about emotional triggers. We tend to focus our marketing on logical triggers, and the problem with that is, it only works on about 10% of people. Too often we focus on logical triggers, like “this thing will save you 18% on your gas bill” or if you're selling a fitness product, “this product will help you'll lose 3.7% more body fat.” The problem with that is you're selling to people’s logical brain. I've got a PhD who works for me, he runs one of my companies, Dr. German Garcia Fresco, and he says, the human brain is divided up into different parts. Of all the different parts of the brain, Dr. Fresco says not that much of it is logical. The parts we use the most are more primitive, they’re just reacting. We all know how people are. Just think about people in traffic, they ain't using logic. People think it's acceptable to be in the fast lane in traffic and just get off the freeway by switching five lanes in one pass. It doesn't make logical sense because they're about to kill themselves and everybody else on the freeway, but the primitive brain is reacting to an emotional trigger. The primitive brain is just thinking, “oh shit, that’s my exit, I need to get off now!” It’s fight-or-flight. They do the same thing in marketing.
If your marketing is too logical, you won’t be reaching most people on a level where they will take action. In some of the advanced marketing stuff, I talk about the nuances to logical marketing, which will increase your closing rate beyond just doing emotional marketing. In today’s email though, I'm talking about some of the important amd not always used basics. It’s just like in basketball, you have to learn the fundamentals before you can get into the advanced stuff. You don’t learn how to do a cross-over before you know how to dribble.
Go more primitive with your marketing. I'll just put it that simple. That's why fast-food places take the time to have professionals dress up their food and take pictures of it. I remember I walked into a burger place with a friend of mine, I think it might’ve been Wendy’s or something. It was his first time. He picks the burger with the biggest picture on the menu. It was a giant looking burger, with thick juicy patties, crisp green lettuce, deliciously red tomatoes and just the perfect amount of ketchup oozing out. I’m talking one hell of a good-looking burger. Well, when he finally got his burger, it was limp, soggy and basically it looked like shit. He turned to the lady behind the register and he pointed to the menu “I want that,” pointing to the picture of the most perfect looking burger. He wanted the burger they were emotionally showing him with their marketing. He didn’t want one that's half deflated, with soggy lettuce. Fast food places are notorious for having have experts that lay out the food in a way that hits your emotional triggers one after another. Bam. Bam. Bam. Another example is real estate. They say it's not about the specs on the house, it's not about the square footage, it’s about the emotional triggers. Can the buyer picture themselves living there? That’s why you should never try to sell an empty house. The emotional triggers aren't there. People can't imagine themselves living there as easily when it’s empty. They can't make the logical inferences to visualize and forecast their potential experience of living there. They need you as the “marketer” or the person selling the house, to hit those emotional triggers. ======= Once you know how to hit the emotional triggers, you're going to need to know advanced tips and tricks. 2. Big Risks
Taking big risks gets attention. Just think about some people who took risks on the internet. I get flack because I had a Lamborghini commercial, that was a little risky at the time. People get butt hurt when people show conspicuous consumption, but I'm not that materialistic. People think I am, but I’ve lived with no electricity, I’ve lived with no toilet and just a bucket for five years on an Amish farm. If you ask anybody that knows me, I’m not the most materialistic guy in town, but I did put up a Lamborghini video, which was risky. If you’re too conservative, you’ll be relegated to the middle, and the middle of the marketing pack is the unnoticed. A lot of the time success is on the other side of fear. Don’t be afraid to take risks, just be calculated in the risks you take. 3. Be Memorable Memory works in marketing and you can help encourage it in your prospects so they recall your brand and your messaging. You want to be memorable. That could mean your domain name, your logo, business card or whatever. What I try to do, is a little trick, I don't tell all my tricks., but I’ll tell you this trick. If you want to pick a name for your product or company that people will be like “I think I've heard of that company before,” keep it simple. You want it to go viral. People have to be out with their friends and be like “yo there was this blankety-blank product that I heard, you should check it out.” If it’s too complicated, like if it's called onomatopoeia products or something, they're not going to remember it. This may sound like common sense stuff, but believe me, common sense is no longer common. I see so many weird names out there, and when you ask the owner why they picked it, they'll say stuff like "it's my dad's middle name" or "it means strength in portuguese." It's not about what YOU like, it's about what will resonate with your target audience. I like to use the wine test. Imagine some friends are out drinking some wine. After a few glasses of wine, can they remember your product? Can they find the website? Names Nike or Dairy Queen, they’re simple and memorable. That’s why brands are very intelligent these days in terms of how to position themselves. It’s simple things like how many syllables there are and how harsh it sounds.
There's a few exceptions to this rule, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor. He was told he'll never be popular because people don't know how to pronounce his name, but it actually is a memorable name. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not that hard to say after you’ve heard it once or twice. It doesn't always have to be very simple, but as a general rule, simpler is always better.
So those are three marketing tips for you before I go to bed. We can revolutionize our minds if we use the teachings of the smartest people in the world. It’s all about finding those bad ass, cutting-edge mentors, whether they be in books, in-person, courses, conferences or wherever. That's what I'm constantly searching for, and along the way I share a lot of what my mentors teach me with all of you.
